Pyramids of Giza
Complete 2026 visitor guide — tickets, history, photo spots, and everything you need to plan your visit to the last remaining wonder of the ancient world.
What to Expect
The Giza Plateau sits on the southwestern edge of Greater Cairo, where the city literally ends and the desert begins. The Pyramids rise from that boundary in a way that is genuinely difficult to process when you first see them. There is no soft arrival — you turn a corner and suddenly they are there, larger than any photograph can convey.
The complex includes three main pyramids — Khufu (the Great Pyramid), Khafre, and Menkaure — along with the Great Sphinx, smaller queens' pyramids, tombs, causeways, and the Valley Temple. When completed around 2570 BCE, the Great Pyramid stood 146.5 meters tall and was the tallest human-made structure on Earth for nearly 3,800 years.
The area around the site is a rolling parade of horse-drawn carriages, camels, tour buses, and taxis. New rules and improved facilities have made the visitor experience better than ever, but arriving early and knowing what to expect is still essential.

The Three Great Pyramids
Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops)
Built for Pharaoh Khufu (r. 2589–2566 BCE), this is the oldest and largest pyramid. It originally stood 146.5m tall and was the tallest structure in the world for over 3,800 years. The interior is a complex system of passages leading to the King's Chamber — empty except for a granite sarcophagus. The climb is strenuous, narrow, and humid. Go inside right at 8:00 AM to avoid the worst crowds and heat.
Pyramid of Khafre (Chephren)
Khafre's pyramid often looks taller than Khufu's because it sits on higher ground. It retains some of its original polished limestone casing at the peak — a small detail that shows how all the pyramids once gleamed white. The massive Valley Temple near the Sphinx is also part of Khafre's complex.
Pyramid of Menkaure (Mykerinos)
The smallest of the three, offering a quieter visit. Builders originally cased it partially in red granite. Its modest scale makes it easier to appreciate the craftsmanship up close.
The Great Sphinx
The most famous piece of ancient statuary in the world. Carved from a single massive limestone block, it has a lion's body and a human head — likely representing Pharaoh Khafre. The Sphinx faces east toward the rising sun and has guarded the Giza necropolis for over 4,500 years.
The best viewing angle is from the walkway between the Sphinx and the Valley Temple, where you can see both the Sphinx and Khafre's pyramid in the same frame.
